A couple of seasons back I started logging every game properly. The score and who scored, yes, but also minutes played, positions, who turned up, and when we conceded. Part of the reason was that I built Trac and wanted to test it on a real team rather than a spreadsheet. What I did not expect was how much a season of honest data would change the way I coach. The data kept proving me wrong. There was one midfielder I was sure had gone off the boil for a month. When I looked back, he had been involved in the build-up to more goals in that stretch than anyone. What had actually happened was that he stopped scoring himself, and scoring is the thing a coach remembers. Recency and goals dominate your memory. Not because I had anything against them. Because the loud ones and the obvious ones get picked first when you are making subs in your head at pitch-side in the rain. When I plotted the goals we let in against the clock, a pattern jumped out. We were soft in the last ten minutes of the first half. Week after week. Once I could see it, the cause was obvious. The kids were switching off mentally just before the break, and a couple were tiring. We changed what we did in training in that final third of each half, talked about concentration before the whistle, and the leak slowed right down. I would never have spotted it from feel alone. The kid who bangs in a hat-trick gets the lift home full of praise. But one of my centre-halves went a whole season without a goal and was, on any honest reckoning, one of our most important players. Once you track more than the scoreline, the picture widens. Interceptions, clearances, the games we kept clean when he played. None of that shows up in a result.
